High Speed Finishing

There is an old axiom; “Time is Money”. When working with precious metals; this axiom aptly applies. Process time of jewelry products equates to a time-cost-of-money calculation. The higher the metals cost and the longer the process time, the more cost to the manufacture. High speed finishing shortens the process time to manufacture products.

For high speed finishing; G&S Jewelry Mfg has a large model HZ-120 Centrifugal Barrel Tumbler manufactured by Mass Finishing, Inc. (MFI) of Howard Lake, MN. This system has four sealed tubes that spin in a planetary system very dynamically. So much so that it can reduce a typical two day tumbling cycle to less than 7 hours.
 

Handling Issues

However, the size of the system presented some issues with handling small parts with intrinsic high value. This was most manifest with unloading the tubs after tumbling is complete. We made contact with the technical team at Mass Finishing to solve this issue. They suggested an elegant solution to our problem.

Solution

A sealed insert canister was their solution.  The frame around the canister could be securely inserted into each tub. The parts, media and solution would be loaded into the canister. A pair of “o” rings seal the plug in place. The pictures below show these attributes in detail.

Maintaining control of the parts is easy with this design. Opening the canister and removing plug makes for easy emptying into rinse basket.

The canister is placed in the tub and the cover of the tub locked in place. The frame is held tightly under the tub lid. The frame is clamped securely between the lid and the lining of the tub.

Operation

Our system has four tubs. Tub loading is sequential. First the tub marked “1” is unloaded.  Similarly, the tub marked “2”; second and so forth.  Tub tracking ensures that system balance is maintained. This in fact will minimize vibration. Furthermore the MFI system has an excellent jogging control function. This reduces the loading time between tubs. Before long, the system is fully loaded. Finally the safety lid is lowered and locked in place and the system started.

Meanwhile when system is running, previously unloaded material can be rinsed. The canisters are then reloaded and prepared for the next lot to be finished. That is to say having multiple canisters in back of those operating increases throughput dramatically. We believe a second complete set besides the set in the machine to be perfect for handling long runs.
 

Results

After the parts were removed we compared to our previously tumbled samples. The results were exceptional. To clarify; the tumbling time will vary depending upon the process step and finish requirement. First stage is cut media, followed by a second stage of burnishing. Lastly a third stage of ceramic media to deliver a mirror finish.
 

Summary

To sum up; the use of these canisters has shortened process times dramatically. Before our avalanche barrel tumbling took two or three days to complete. Today we have shortened times around 60% across the board. Now our planning is centered around how best to leverage this time savings.

Design

First and foremost we want to start with an image of your design. CAD drawing, Word/PowerPoint drawing or a hand drawn sketch all work for us. Once we have the sketch we can start developing sizes which will give us volumes.

Tools To Enhance Jewelry Design

G&S Jewelry uses many state of the art tools to support designing elegant jewelry. These include CAD artwork renderings, 3D Printing and Vacuum Investment Casting. Much of our equipment has been purchased at Rio Grande. They have the equipment and experienced support personnel, hence we recommend them to everyone in the jewelry industry.

Material Selection For Jewelry Design

We can then apply the material density of the alloy you want your jewelry to be made with. This can be any of the karat golds, sterling silver, bronze, or lead-free pewter. G&S Jewelry does them all! Therefore we have a material for almost every price point.

Cost Analysis

With this information in hand, we can now develop a cost analysis. Here we can evaluate the cost of manufacture against your sell price. Consequently you can make a decision well before spending money on inventory otherwise you may have unsold inventory. Met your price point? met; GREAT! We can then move quickly to building prototypes.

However, if price point is too high as a consequence we need to look at the design again. For this reason, we can look at changing the dimensions, changing the material or both. Thinner or smaller will reduce weight. Changing the material from a high cost material such as 18 karat gold to 14 karat or sterling silver will also reduce costs.

Mastering

Now that the cost is complete. We have all the sizes identified. Because of this we can now produce 3D renders. Once the renders are approve; the masters can be produced directly.

G&S Jewelry Mfg uses both traditional milling, a reducing process as well as three dimensional (3D) printing an additive process. In contrast; the 3D printing produces a much smoother surface. Furthermore; our best machine the B9 3D printer shown above is much faster than our milling machine.

Finally this is where we make design come to life! Whether by vacuum investment casting or centrifugal casting, molten metal cast in a mold completes the formation!

3D Printing

Based upon a recommendation from Rio Grande; G&S selected a B9 3D printing system. To date it has exceeded our expectations. Our reasons were based upon the following criteria: First it prints masters with smooth surfaces and sharp definition. Second, the software package is user friendly. Third, high speed printing. Furthermore the multiple resolution setting options for printing objects such as tools and fixtures that do not require high resolution. In comparison, other printers are much slower due to their hardware design. Consequently problems may not be recognized for hours. In contrast problems encountered in the B9 are addressed in a much shorter time frame. The designers certainly recognize that “Time is money”

Laser Engraving

G&S needed to add laser engraving to our capabilities.  As a result we consulted with Rio Grande for their recommendation. Consequently we tested and selected their Neutec LIGHTScribe 20W engraver. It has delivered even more performance than we have anticipated. We have added tooling and fixturing to the platform. As a result our precision and throughput have probably increased by a factor of four.

High Speed Part Separation

Our business growth dictated a need for a high speed part separation tool.  Once again the tech team at Rio Grande provided us guidance to a solution. Their part separator allows us prompt separation of charms, links, and beads. Finally it thoroughly rinses the media in an enclosed bin for ease of handling and restoration. To their basic system we have added a water filtration and recycling system. This system captures the metal bearing effluent. This effluent is then dried and sent out to a smelter for recovery. Most noteworthy for us desert dwellers, the water usage is significantly reduced.

By and large most of our customers have artistic abilities in hand working, graphic arts and the tools to work on their own.  Above all they know in their mind’s eye what they want. In the same way, they may have limits on moving from ideation or concept to a prototype. By the same token the gap between a prototype to full scale production is the limiting constraint.

As a result of these gaps; G&S Jewelry Mfg created their own design center. All things considered, this approach offers our customers significant leveraging of dedicated equipment worth thousands of dollars. In other words, our design studio is your design studio!

Advances in digital communication and useful tools such as video conferencing and mobile communication allow for “face-to-face” meetings thousands of miles away. Accordingly, you can access us and our capabilities to see a 3D rendering or a laser engraving in real time. Of course you can always visit our facility, but the speed of business is increased considerably in this manner.

V-Twin two wheeled thunder. You can hear it a mile away, thunder from a V-Twin powered two wheeled stallion. The low frequency drumbeat gives it away long before you see it. Then it comes into view, the driver cooly leaned back gliding earnestly down the open road.

The V-Twin engine has a long and glorious motorcycle history. They have powered some of the classic motorcycles of all time. From the utilitarian police, military and sports bikes to the classic built for enjoyment motorcycles of today; the V-Twin has endured the test of time.

If you attended or have seen some of the great motorcycle rallies; V-Twin power is the most common and a staple for the classic chopper builders. Fortified with strengthened internal components and girded with acres of chrome and blacked out hardware, they look AND sound terrific. Cruising down Main Street, the “blip-blip-blip” at low RPM is often punctuated with a sharp throttle blast to draw the right attention.

Pulling away slowly from a traffic light, a quick twist of the throttle while changing gears delivers the right harmony of speed and thunder. Wind in your hair, symphony of engine sounds in your ears, and smile on your face. Riding into the sunset has never been so much fun.

All things considered a V-Twin is a great engine with a terrific history. Consequently G&S Jewelry Mfg had to build our tribute to the V-Twin.

Laser welding is an excellent technique in jewelry manufacturing. It is very precise and therefore useful for small work without disturbing large components. For example; routinely broken jewelry components accept laser welded repairs. In addition small elements of a different metal into a design. Namely karat gold is welded into a sterling silver base. Beads – The 411 on Jewelry Bead Making

Customers and consumers buy alike buy beads by the piece, as part of a piece or by the gross. Here is the 411 on bead making.

Formed Seamless Beads

Beads supplied by W.R. Cobb Company illustrate the beautiful shape, surface finish and consistency of a bead formed from a tube. Their link here illustrates a beautiful 14 karat yellow spherical hollow bead. Customers love the simple elegance of this type of bead. This type of bead by itself or coupled with a pendant is popular regardless of the price of gold. The beauty and value guarantee it will be handed down from generation to generation.

Then again expensive tooling for each bead size will limit the choices. This tooling cost will be spread out over the life of the design making it ideal for high volume applications.

Stamped Beads

Starting with flat sheet, various stamping operations form thin wall beads. Beads stamped into a single half or in a figure-8 double half joined by a thin bridge configuration. Assembly is accomplished by placing the open edges together and soldering or welding then tight. In spite of the soldering step, split type designs have surprisingly diversity for material types and shapes. Specifically, a sterling silver half could readily be matched to a karat gold half to provide color contrast. On the negative side this requires good tooling and/or silversmithing to make an attractive seam.

Some manufacturers frequently employ sterling silver with higher than the standard 925 silver content when soldering for fear that the overall silver fineness will be below the 925 requirement. This is especially true if the solder used is a low silver content solder of 40 – 56% silver.

Investment Cast Beads

Investment casting is a good alternative for some materials and shapes. Besides being extremely flexible on design, it also lends itself to reasonably high volume production. 3D printing is a fast and elegant way of making custom pieces. On the positive side; a 3D printed master can have surface textures, be of asymmetrical shape and can be produced to eliminate solder assembly. The schematic sketch shows a generic cylindrical design with a substantial through hole for cording. This tube style is frequently employed with other components. In fact,  3 or 4 different part styles often comprise a necklace or bracelet.

Sustainable Manufacturing Improvements

G&S Jewelry Mfg has an active and ongoing sustainable manufacturing program for the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle all of our raw materials.  We have taken additional steps to reduce our water consumption for each piece of jewelry we ship. By reusing our deflasking and media rinse water, our water usage has continued to fall.

In-Line Filtration

This is accomplished by first pumping the water through a filtration system and back into a closed loop recirculation system. The clean, filtered water can be reused directly.  By installing new media separator systems that incorporate their own sump, the job is easier. This is because the water in the sump is readily filtered and reused. The illustration below shows a basic schematic drawing for a closed loop two filter system. Additional filters with smaller and smaller filtration pores can be added in serial format to improve small particle filtration. Filters of the same pore size can be placed in parallel to increase flow if required. Our staff removes the filters and dries them to be shipped to the smelter.

Although this may require some time to remove the metal, it is time well spent. The metal is put back into service as a reclaimed natural resource. The net effect is a reduction in the amount of metals having to be mined, refined and converted into new metals. In a like manner, the less water we use once and pour down the drain is water that can be used elsewhere.
