Jewelry Design – What’s First, Second & Third?

You have a great jewelry design you just KNOW everyone will LOVE! Ok, what’s first, second and third on your list to make that design a reality? Hmmm, what to do?

Design

First and foremost we want to start with an image of your design. CAD drawing, Word/PowerPoint drawing or a hand drawn sketch all work for us. Once we have the sketch we can start developing sizes which will give us volumes.

Tools To Enhance Jewelry Design

G&S Jewelry uses many state of the art tools to support designing elegant jewelry. These include CAD artwork renderings, 3D Printing and Vacuum Investment Casting. Much of our equipment has been purchased at Rio Grande. They have the equipment and experienced support personnel, hence we recommend them to everyone in the jewelry industry.

Material Selection For Jewelry Design

We can then apply the material density of the alloy you want your jewelry to be made with. This can be any of the karat golds, sterling silver, bronze, or lead-free pewter. G&S Jewelry does them all! Therefore we have a material for almost every price point.

Cost Analysis

With this information in hand, we can now develop a cost analysis. Here we can evaluate the cost of manufacture against your sell price. Consequently you can make a decision well before spending money on inventory otherwise you may have unsold inventory. Met your price point? met; GREAT! We can then move quickly to building prototypes.

However, if price point is too high as a consequence we need to look at the design again. For this reason, we can look at changing the dimensions, changing the material or both. Thinner or smaller will reduce weight. Changing the material from a high cost material such as 18 karat gold to 14 karat or sterling silver will also reduce costs.

Mastering

Now that the cost is complete. We have all the sizes identified. Because of this we can now produce 3D renders. Once the renders are approve; the masters can be produced directly.

G&S Jewelry Mfg uses both traditional milling, a reducing process as well as three dimensional (3D) printing an additive process. In contrast; the 3D printing produces a much smoother surface. Furthermore; our best machine the B9 3D printer shown above is much faster than our milling machine.

Finally this is where we make design come to life! Whether by vacuum investment casting or centrifugal casting, molten metal cast in a mold completes the formation!

V-Twin Two Wheeled Thunder

V-Twin two wheeled thunder. You can hear it a mile away, thunder from a V-Twin powered two wheeled stallion. The low frequency drumbeat gives it away long before you see it. Then it comes into view, the driver cooly leaned back gliding earnestly down the open road.

The V-Twin engine has a long and glorious motorcycle history. They have powered some of the classic motorcycles of all time. From the utilitarian police, military and sports bikes to the classic built for enjoyment motorcycles of today; the V-Twin has endured the test of time.

If you attended or have seen some of the great motorcycle rallies; V-Twin power is the most common and a staple for the classic chopper builders. Fortified with strengthened internal components and girded with acres of chrome and blacked out hardware, they look AND sound terrific. Cruising down Main Street, the “blip-blip-blip” at low RPM is often punctuated with a sharp throttle blast to draw the right attention.

Pulling away slowly from a traffic light, a quick twist of the throttle while changing gears delivers the right harmony of speed and thunder. Wind in your hair, symphony of engine sounds in your ears, and smile on your face. Riding into the sunset has never been so much fun.

All things considered a V-Twin is a great engine with a terrific history. Consequently G&S Jewelry Mfg had to build our tribute to the V-Twin.

Dynamic High Speed Tumbling For Small Size Parts

G&S Jewelry high speed tumbling equipment significantly shortens tumbling time of small parts. Our system is designed by Mass Finishing Inc. located in Howard Lake, MN. Tumbling is a common mass finishing technique employed throughout the metal processing industry. Large and heavy pieces require a long tumbling process, this is understood. In contrast, small parts can be tumbled faster. Likewise customers routinely want their product as soon as possible and they want parts finished equally.

Part Size

The overall dimensions of the part have bearing on what tumbling technique will deliver the best results. Large parts require more care in handling than small parts.  On the other hand small parts fit the high speed process perfectly. The small size and weight reduces part to part impact energy below the critical threshold.

How High Speed Tumbling Works

The high speed tumbling process at G&S Jewelry Mfg is comprised of four tubs rotating in a planetary system. This planetary system in turn rotates around a center axis. As a result, the compound effect creates high velocity of one element to another. The energy creates so much friction that room temperature starting solution can reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The schematic drawing below shows how the parts tubs rotate around their center axis while they rotate around the center axis of the drum. Adding together the parts, media and water solution  in each tub; the spinning action creates a high level of interaction in the spinning tub.

Our high speed tumbling system works with all types of wet media. Cut down impregnated plastic, burnishing and ceramic media all work well in our system.

Sustainable Manufacturing Improvements

G&S Jewelry Mfg has an active and ongoing sustainable manufacturing program for the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle all of our raw materials.  We have taken additional steps to reduce our water consumption for each piece of jewelry we ship. By reusing our deflasking and media rinse water, our water usage has continued to fall.

In-Line Filtration

This is accomplished by first pumping the water through a filtration system and back into a closed loop recirculation system. The clean, filtered water can be reused directly.  By installing new media separator systems that incorporate their own sump, the job is easier. This is because the water in the sump is readily filtered and reused. The illustration below shows a basic schematic drawing for a closed loop two filter system. Additional filters with smaller and smaller filtration pores can be added in serial format to improve small particle filtration. Filters of the same pore size can be placed in parallel to increase flow if required. Our staff removes the filters and dries them to be shipped to the smelter.

Although this may require some time to remove the metal, it is time well spent. The metal is put back into service as a reclaimed natural resource. The net effect is a reduction in the amount of metals having to be mined, refined and converted into new metals. In a like manner, the less water we use once and pour down the drain is water that can be used elsewhere.

Opening G&S Jewelry Design Center is Getting Closer!

The Opening of our G&S Jewelry Design Center is Getting Closer! We have been working on the build-out of our area and have begun moving equipment into the work spaces in preparation for opening our design center to our customers. When open we will have a space to meet with our customers and go over their needs in real time. The technology we will offer will be extensively driven by our CAD programming suite. Our CAD systems will be able to provide:

Once the piece has been approved, the customer can see the means of producing a master by 3D printing or traditional milling.

Finishing and customization will not be overlooked. We will be able to demonstrate to our customers what the piece will look like when laser engraved or etched. This is especially important when selecting fonts designs, font sizes and depths. The tags and earrings below illustrate classic fonts embossed (top) and engraved (bottom) on sterling sheet with a laser etched background of two different patterns fine on top and coarse on the bottom. These examples can give the customer the touch and feel of what the pieces will be when finished.

G&S Installs New Part-Media Separator!

We are pleased to announce the installation of our new part-media separator.  The Neutec Wet-Media Flow Separator uses a controlled feeding system coupled with an adjustable control based upon part and media weights. The system was provided by Rio Grande, located right here in Albuquerque.

Taking Pewter Casting for A Spin

Pewter casting is normally done using a centrifugal casting system where metal is poured or ladled into a spinning casting system with a rubber mold clamped in place. The picture below show the round opening of the top half of the mold. Metal will be poured into the hole and distributed radially outward to to fill each cavity of the belt buckle shown. The hot metal flows through the channels shown and is forced against the outer extremes of the mold. This continues until all of the cavities in the mold are completely full.

The mold itself is a two piece or more design. The mold is more or less split, approximately 50% of the design is in one half and the the remaining in the bottom half. Alignment between the two is accomplished by the use of the nuts or pins as shown above.

When assembled, the mold is then placed in the caster, centered on a spinning platform. A clamping plate is placed on top and turned slightly to engage the pins on the locking fixture stands. Air pressure is applied beneath the platform to lift the plate and securely squeeze the mold against the clamp. This seals the mold to prevent metal from weeping out radially.

Once the metal is at the right temperature, and the mold is warmed up and in place, we are ready to cast. Air is applied to the clamp, the lid to the caster closed and metal poured into the tapered tundish tube opening shown in the middle of the lid in the photo below.

After the fill is complete; the spinning mold is given time to cool. The mold is removed and the pieces lifted from their cavities and parted from the feed sprues. A quick grind of the sprued area and the piece is not ready for the next step in finiahing. This can include polishing, inlay and applying a darkening patina or painting to give the part color and contrast. The photo below shows the piece after cast clean-up.

Chip Inlay – Adding A Splash of Color to Your Designs!

Chip inlay is an attractive means of adding color to your designs. We take ground synthetic stone and fill cavities and channels in a wide range of designs. The chips are then infiltrated with low shrink adhesive that binds the chips together and securely to the piece. The cavity is slightly overfilled to create a dome. This dome is then ground flat when the adhesive is fully cured and hard enough to grind without tearing. The large surfaces shown in the pewter belt buckle below require careful attention when filling to ensure even distribution of the chip and binder.

After grinding is complete the surface is inspected to ensure that no pinholes are visible and the stone is securely bound. The piece then returns to finish processing. The example below shows a bronze ring that was chip inlaid, finish tumbled, silver plated and then blackened to highlight the texture detail

The starting design has to have enough depth to adequately hold the chip. Good examples would be bezel containing components and parts such as rings, earrings, pendants, and bracelets. The parts are first cast and the cast surface roughened to create a good foundation for adhesion.

Celebrating Native American Handmade Sterling Jewelry!

We recently had a beautiful piece of sterling jewelry handmade by Ronald Tom at Nakai Trading here in Albuquerque. Ron is a Navajo craftsman with many years of experience and carries on the Native American tradition of handmade and handcrafted sterling jewelry. The Sterling Silver was supplied by W.R. Cobb in East Providence and consisted of 6″ wide stock for the base and a special #4 Comfort Low Dome for the rails on the top. The rails were soldered in place by hand and the piece oxidized in liver of sulfur and then all of the upper surfaces polished to a high shine.

The photos below show the outstanding result in a size 5-1/2 cuff bracelet.
